Jetblue builds bikes for youth in foster care

This week, jetBlue’s financial team flew Together We Rise to Long Island City, New York where we were able to assemble 30 new bikes for a group of foster care children. jetBlue knew they wanted to have fun while giving back to the community they work in so they called us up!  The Financial Team was filled with so much energy, the collaboration made for an exciting day and the team split into teams to play volleyball, kickball, relay races and most importantly, build bikes that will help provide transportation to foster youth in the Long Island City community.

These bikes might not seem like much to many of us whose bikes remain forgotten in the garage, but to a foster child, this gift provides them with a sense of normalcy. Remember feeling scared and excited at the same time as you held on to those handlebars when you were learning to ride your bike for the first time? Learning how to ride a bike is a touchstone childhood memory and our Build a Bike project helps create this memory for many foster children. TWR is also very appreciative of the hard work of the receiving agency, forestdaleinc.org who helps families in Queens break the cycle of poverty and help them rebuild their lives.  It’s causes like these that help Together We Rise stay motivated in its journey to help foster kids navigate the foster care system.
