First, let me thank you for visiting this page!
My name is Hadassah, I am a junior studying Vocal Performance at TWU, an intern with Together We Rise, and I too was in foster care.
Together We Rise (TWR) is a nonprofit organization located in Brea California. They were founded in 2008 by Danny Mendoza after he found out his 9-year-old cousin was living in a car. After running into many obstacles because he was under 21, he became even more determined to help children in foster care. Wanting to do more, he spoke with friends about his vision to help others, and Together We Rise became a reality. As of today, TWR is assisting foster youth all across our nation. Partnering with various companies, volunteers, interns, and donors, Together We Rise has been able to change the way children experience foster care.
Together We Rise has many programs that help foster children. From reuniting siblings for a day at Disney, building bikes, constructing birthday boxes, and forming sweet cases, foster youth are able to create lasting, positive, memories because of the work of TWR. For me, the Sweet Case program holds a special place in my heart. Sweet Cases, or Teen Bags, are personalized duffel bags that contain a teddy bear, blanket, hygiene kit, and other various items. When children enter the system, it is very abrupt, and it happens quickly. Many times, they are forced to place their clothes in trash bags while being taken from their home. Unfortunately, it does not stop there. In a lot of cases, foster children are moved from home to home, carrying their few belongings in trash bags. I know this to be true because I have been in the same situations as these children. Many times I have had nothing but a trash bag to place my few precious belongings and clothes in. While in foster care, children go through various emotions. They can feel helpless, restricted, lost, scared, and unloved. It is not uncommon to feel like just another number or case. However, I have found that it is the small acts of kindness that often leave the most significant impact on their lives. Just sending something personalized to a foster child can help them know that they matter and that there are people in this world who care about them. It is for these reasons that I decided to become an intern for Together We Rise. For many years I have wanted to spread awareness and speak up for the thousands of children in our nation's foster system. My goal with this fundraiser is to not only raise $1500 but to also spread kindness to children that desperately need it. It would mean so much to me, and to others across our country if you would take the time to share or contribute to this cause. Once I reach my goal, I will be able to host an event for people in my community to come together and assemble these duffel bags. Once completed, I will then go on to give these bags to children in our local foster system that have nothing other than a trash bag to carry their belongings in.
