One foster care success story is a forever home ending.

Sometimes the bigger picture doesn’t happen all at once but instead, it happens in pieces. Sydney Newman and her husband began their adoption journey back in January of 2018. They started with the intention to solely adopt. By October they became registered adoptive parents.

Foster Care to Success the Call

In January 2019 they received a call notifying them that they had been matched with a month and a half old boy. The boy’s foster mom did not want to renew her license therefore they had to take him in as foster parents. Sydney and her husband immediately began the process of becoming foster parents. They needed to take over his licenses before they could have him in their home. Once they became approved foster parents everything began to fall in place.

Moving In!

Within a month of becoming foster parents, they had extended visitation. Eventually, the boy could finally move in! Once he moved in the couple became his legal foster parents and approved adoptive parents. In the state of Michigan, a child needs to live with the adoptive parents for at least 6 months before the adoption is approved so they had to wait a few months before everything became official.  On October 9, 2019, the family legally adopted their son. Although, the Newman’s knew they had a son the moment they met him.

Adopting a biracial baby came with some unexpected lessons. The Newman’s took advantage of cultural classes that their agency offered. There they learned about hair and skin treatment their son needed as well as other things.

The Best Advice for Foster Care to Success

The best advice Sydney Newman wants to relay to prospective foster/adoptive parents is to take any classes your agency offers. You can’t really be certain what to expect your first time. Being a parent is pretty straight forward on paper. But having to deal with different situations in real-time is a day by day challenge. Through it all, you have to remember to relax and try to have a good support system because no one expects you to be perfect as long as you know when to ask for help.
