Foster to Adopt Ohio: Gaby’s Story

Image (3)

Gaby Glaser had a unique perspective on how foster to adopt in Ohio works. Growing up she lived in a home with foster siblings and even 5 adopted ones! She is now a supervisor at the Department of Child Services. She’s seen first-hand the hardships that some of these kids go through. After having to watch kids sleep at the DCS office night after night she decided to become a licensed foster parent to try to make some of these kids’ lives a little easier.

The Start of Fostering

In August of 2017 Gabby received a placement of 4-day old twins. She was prepared to foster them until they could be reunified with their parents. Some-time after the placement one of the twins had a medical emergency and had to be rushed to the hospital. There, Gabby met the boys’ bio parents. Although the bio parents didn’t have custody of the children anymore they still cared for their safety. From that point Gabby and the bio parents formed a relationship and stayed in contact to so that Gabby could update them on the well-being of the twins.

Sad Twist While Fostering to Adopt in Ohio

Unfortunately, the twins’ bio parents decided that they could not care properly for the children and decided to sign over consent for adoption. They knew that Gabby could provide a loving home and trusted her. After 10 months the adoption went through and on November 4, 2019 and they officially had a forever home.

Although Gabby grew up in a home with foster kids/adopted siblings and worked at the DCS she says she needed help through the entire process. She never knew what it took to be the actual parent and the responsibility and work that comes with it.

Solid Advice

Her advice is to find a stable network of people that can provide support. No matter how much she thought she could go through the process alone, she never could. Having a support system will make the entire process easier for the foster parents and the children.
