Foster to Adoption LA- The Smith Family

Foster to Adoption LA- The Smith Family

Foster to adoption in LA can take time. Children in the foster care system deserve more than what the system can provide for them. They all deserve a safe, supportive, loving home. The Smith family recognized this injustice and decided to try to help the best way they could. For years they wanted to help at least one child but didn’t have the capability. In 2018 they finally had room in their house to care for a child and decided to go through the process.

Taking the Steps to Foster to Adopt in LA

The Smith family took the required classes and steps in order to start fostering. To their surprise they received their first placement call within two months of being certified. A 4-year-old boy named Adam needed immediate care because his current foster family needed to travel due to a family emergency and couldn’t take him with them.

Adam’s transition happened almost immediately. The Smith family received the call on a Tuesday, met him on Saturday, had him visit on Sunday, and by Sunday he fully moved in. Typically, the fostering process takes longer than that, but Adam had a special case. Although the family didn’t have a lot of exposure to him, they didn’t care. To them, Adam fit perfectly with them as if he had always been a part of the family.

Growing a Family by more than One

To be a foster parent one has to understand that if reunification is the best option then you have to push for it. The Smith family understood that and kept it open as an option. Although reunification didn’t work out in their situation, they still maintained a relationship with Adam’s bio mom. They update her regularly and even call her to see Adam once a month.

Foster to Adoption LA is a Long But Deserving Journey

The fostering process can be a tough road, especially for first-timers. The best advice the Smith family can give is to surround yourself with a community of people that understand what you’re going through. They found a community of people that shared similar experiences with them and ultimately helped them get through the hard times. The entire experience turned out to be one of the most rewarding ones the family has had. They encourage others who are thinking about fostering to take a leap of faith and help a kid in foster care.
